Leroy Chatman died Saturday, Sept. 11, 2010, at his residence in the Silver community of Clarendon County.

Born Aug. 20, 1932, in the Home Branch area of Clarendon County, he was a son of Effie Thames McCray and the late Willie Spann Sr., and raised in the home of the late Pete and Estelle Pack Chatman. His education was obtained in the public schools of Clarendon County. He was a member of Mt. Zero Missionary Baptist Church. Leroy was employed for several years with Georgia Pacific of Alcolu, Foster Hardware and Holliday Electric & Plumbing Service. In 1971, he established his own company, Chatman's Electric and Plumbing Service.

Survivors include his mother, Effie McCray of Silver; wife, Julia Chatman of Manning; special friend, Rena Blakley of Manning; children, Leroy (Leola) Chatman Jr. of Woodbridge, Va., Michael Chatman of Manning, Deloris (King) Bennett, Linda McBride, Terry Chatman, Ethel Chatman, Valarie (Lester) Oliver and Tiffany Monroe, all of Manning; siblings, Willie (Arlene) Spann of Manning, Alex (Jo Ann) Spann of Sumter, Johnnie (Betty) Spann of Washington, D.C., Samuel (Ruby) Spann of Winston-Salem, N.C., Elease Davis, Carrie Stukes and Lou B. (Russell) Nelson, all of Manning, Louvenia Dickson of Forestville, Md., and Henrietta Patterson and Ulease (Roland) Goines, both of Sumter; uncles and aunts, Eddie Thames of Baltimore, David Thames of Wintergreen, Fla., Carrie Spann of Manning, Oleatha King of Sumter, Annie Black of Denmark and Susan McCray of Greenville, N.C.; 27 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by two daughters, Madgelene Rameasar and Julia Denise Chatman; one sister, Katie Massenberg; and eight brothers, John, King, Chester, David, Joseph, JB Chatman, Clarence and Joseph Spann.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Zero Missionary Baptist Church with the pastor, the Rev. Henry Presley, officiating, assisted by the Revs. Major Lloyd, Ethel Sweat, C. Richburg, John Roberts, David Pugh and Arkus Frierson. Interment will follow in Mt. Zero Missionary Baptist Church cemetery.

The family is receiving relatives and friends at 8546 Silver Road, Silver community of Manning, and 531 Skyview Drive, Manning.
