Lee County Sheriff’s Office seeks the public’s help in investigating a dog sale that turned deadly Monday night.

At about 6:47 p.m., deputies responded to a call that a man was shot at the Kentucky Fried Chicken along Sumter Highway.

Investigators learned that Lonnie Alford Ray, 76, of Lee County, made arrangements online to sell his French bulldog in the parking lot of the restaurant. During the meeting, several suspects grabbed the dog’s leash and fired multiple shots at Ray and a 77-year-old acquaintance who came with him, according to Sheriff Daniel Simon.

Ray was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries; the acquaintance was not harmed, Simon said.

“This is a tragedy. A 76-year-old male thinking he was going there to make a sale of a dog; he entrusted them to meet there in what he thought was a safe place. When he got there, it was an ultimate surprise that these assailants had something else in mind,” Simon said. “They didn’t have any intention of making a sale there. Not only did they steal the dog, but they also took this gentleman’s life; it’s just heartless.”

No arrests have been made in the shooting. Anyone with information is asked to contact Lee County Sheriff’s Office at (803) 484 - 5353.

To ensure residents have a safe place for these exchanges, Lee County Sheriff’s Office is creating a safe zone at its headquarters. Residents will be able to make arrangements and safe exchanges at the agency, all of which will be video recorded and audio recorded as well as in the presence of law enforcement.

“We’re doing everything that we can to make the safest environment for the citizens of Lee County,” Simon said.
