Lakewood's Ramirez lights up the scoreboard as Gator Classic MVP

When the Lakewood boys soccer team opened its season during the weekend with its annual Gator Classic, LHS needed a goal-scorer that was ready to step up. Lakewood hasn't won its home tournament since 2017, and Grayson Ramirez was determined to end that this season.

"We've been wanting this for the longest (time)," Ramirez said of the tournament title. "I came in there 100% and really wanted it for this year because it's my senior year. I did my best, and it worked out for us. It felt nice, very emotional."

With an excellent performance over two games, Ramirez was named tournament MVP. Soon after, Ramirez took home the recognition of being the Hines Furniture Athlete of the Week.

"It's very special," Ramirez said of winning the vote. "A lot of people supported me, especially coach (Mike Carraher). Special shoutout to Carlos (Cadena); the two of us have been doing it a while. Very happy at the end of the day."

Lakewood opened the tournament against Laurence Manning. The Gators trailed 1-0 at the half, but Lakewood scored three unanswered goals after the break. Ramirez found the back of the net on two of those goals, while also dishing out an assist to Cadena.

"We had to learn from our mistakes," Ramirez said of the halftime adjustments. "That was our first regular season game, so we were learning how to work together. We just had to work together and trust each other."

The Gators faced Darlington in the championship game. Tied at two, Ramirez assisted Cadena for the game-winning goal, before adding two more of his own to complete a hat trick in the win. He was thrilled to team up with his longtime friend on the game-winner.

"It was a very competitive game; we kept going back and forth. We were just trying to find the net," Ramirez said. "It was a free kick, and I passed it off to Carlos for the tiebreaker. After that, I added two more to secure the win. So, no worries and no stressing for coach."

Lakewood head coach Carraher has seen Ramirez develop through the years, as he coached the senior Gator in youth soccer back in the day. He knew Ramirez would step up when it was needed.

"I've seen him grow through the years as a player, and his skill level has increased from year to year. He's one of those dependable players that you need in those tough situations that the whole team can lean on," Carraher said. "He has to battle being a marked man. Having to overcome those challenges in the game and being able to break away is something he's improved with. He's handling the pressure of defenders."

Ramirez hopes the strong start in the Gator Classic will propel Lakewood to a strong season.

"I think it really uplifted our whole team to see us succeed like that," Ramirez said. "Everyone was happy with the win and working hard now. It helped us. I think we're going to work hard for the rest of the season."
