Cmdr. L. Robert Langley, 98, of Sumter, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2021, at Covenant Place.

He was born on May 3, 1923, in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, he was a son of the late William P. and Laura Condon Langley of Pittsfield.

He was predeceased by his wife, Patricia Turner Langley; and a brother, Air Force Pilot, 2nd Lt. Linwood D. Langley, who was killed in action on Nov. 29, 1943, in Germany.

Cmdr. Langley, U.S. Navy retired, graduated from the Bolles School in Jacksonville, Florida; Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tennessee; and Golden Gate University in San Francisco, California.

Cmdr. Langley had a combined total of 40 years of service as an aviator in the U.S. Navy and as a pilot in the U.S. Navy Reserves; he also had 34 years of service in the USAF as an auditor general, Tactical Air Command at Shaw AFB in Sumter.

He was an active member of Lincoln Memorial University Alumni, where he was recently inducted into the Professional Hall of Fame. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Columbia, where he served as an usher for more than 30 years.

A heartfelt thank you is extended to Covenant Place of Sumter, Amedisys Hospice and his beloved caretaker, Beverly Rogers.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday at Evergreen Memorial Park, 802 N. Guignard Drive, Sumter, SC 29150 with the Rev. Richard Humphries presiding.

Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Cotton Kirkland, William T. "Billy" McNair, B.F. McGee and all former and current First Baptist Church of Columbia Ushers.

In lieu of flowers, Memorials may be made to the L. Robert Langley Endowed Scholarship at LMU University, 6965 Cumberland Gap Parkway, Harrogate, TN 37752 or to the Kershaw County Humane Society, 128 Black River Road, Camden, SC 29020.
