Joseph Edward "Joe" Burnette, 90, husband of Elizabeth "Liz" Buford Burnette, died Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2023, at Prisma Health Tuomey in Sumter.

Born Dec. 14, 1932, in Boles, Kentucky, he was a son of the late Joseph H. Burnette and Lockie Masters Burnette. Mr. Burnette was a member of Grace Baptist Church, where he served as a Sunday School teacher for many years. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran and retired from civil service at Shaw Air Force Base. He was a Mason, Shriner and a member of the American Legion Post 15.

Survivors include his wife of 66 years; a son, Edd Burnette (Mandi) of Sumter; a sister, Ann Bryant of Tennessee; nieces, Sonja Plumlee (Tal) and Pam May (Bill); a brother-in-law, Cecil H. Buford Jr. (Phyllis) of Tennessee; and a nephew, Marty Buford.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Dr. Steve Williams officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Glen Brown, Stanley Brown, Kelly Knopf, Mike Ard, Tal Plumlee, Mark Ard, Greg Ray, Barry Ray, Andrew Reardon and Alex Reardon.

Honorary pallbearers will be C.W. Ard, George Hussey, Kelly Truluck, Ralph Sandifer, Sam Weinberg, Glen Elmore, Brent Elmore, Gary Elmore and Robbie Elmore.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 8, at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to MSA Hospice and Prisma Health Tuomey for their many acts of kindness and care.
