John Anderson, 61, husband of Geraldine Brock Anderson, of 9635 Stukes Road, died Thursday, Sept. 2, 2010, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born May 19, 1949, in Philadelphia, he was a son of the late Henry and Gardenia Ford Anderson. When he was an infant, his parents relocated to Lamar, where he attended the public schools of Lee County. He relocated back to Philadelphia in 1967, where he completed his high school education. He joined Miracle Revival Deliverance Church, Philadelphia, where he served as choir director. In 1985, he relocated his family to Pinewood.

Mr. Anderson served in the Army and received the National Defense Service Medal along with the Vietnam Service and campaign Medals. In 1969 he received an honorable discharge and returned home. Upon returning, he worked various jobs. Later, he obtained his commercial driver's license and was employed as a long distance truck driver for more than 30 years.

Outside of work, he was an excellent chess player. In Philadelphia, he taught kids to play the game and they went on to the state and World Chess Championships. He also had a love for landscaping. He attended Macedonia Fire Baptized Holiness Church, Silver.

Survivors besides his devoted wife of 38 years include two sons, John (Renee) Anderson of Raeford, N.C., and Joseph DeShawn Anderson of Spartanburg; two daughters, Michelle Yvette Cousin of Fayetteville, N.C., and Alisa Latreze Anderson of Atlanta; seven brothers, Steve (Mary) Anderson of Charleston, Charles Sharper of Statesville, N.C., James Anderson of Fayetteville; Henry Anderson and Alonzo Anderson, both of Atlanta, Odell Anderson of Conyers, Ga., and Jake Anderson of Far Rockaway, N.Y.; three sisters, Bernice (Joe) Black of Conyers, Diane Anderson of Far Rockaway and Christine Isaac of Fayetteville; nine grandchildren, a great-grandchild and a host of other relatives and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Henry Anderson, John Allen Anderson, Joseph and Tony Anderson.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Sept. 7, 2010, at Macedonia Fire Baptized Holiness Church, Silver, with the Rev. Ethel W. Sweat, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

The family received friends at the home.
