Janet Player Smith, wife of Paul Smith, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2025.
She was born in Sumter on Sept. 26, 1936, to the late James Fleetwood Player and Elsie Huggins Player.
She was a member of St Marks Methodist Church, Life Member of Sumter’s Home Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution, The United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Colonial Dames.
She is survived by her husband of 56 years; sons, James Fleetwood Jordan (Paula Singleton) of Hartsville and William Scott Jordan (Nancy Weatherly) of Sumter; daughter, Douglass Smith Johnson (Eric) of Knoxville, Tennessee; niece, Annette Osteen McCaffrey (Sean) of Sumter; nephews, Thomas Osteen (Polly) of Savannah, Tennessee, and Joseph H Player Jr. (Mel) of Dallas, Texas; grandchildren, Jessica Maxwell Barnett (Bill), Billy Jordan (Sherri), Betsy Jordan (Jacob Shipman), Bobbie Sinner (Brandon), Bryan Vipperman, Tyler, Kendall and Camryn Johnson; grandnephews, Ian and James McCaffrey; grandnieces, Erin McCaffrey and Janessa Player; 13 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Joseph Hiram Player; sister, Nonie Player Osteen Mills; and nieces, Janice Osteen Byrd Figueroa, Carol Osteen Hammons and Kimberly Mills.
The family would like to acknowledge her very special, longtime friend and bridge partner, Joyce Bigbie, and her care provider and special friend, Eloise Harvin.
Graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 17, 2025, in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers please consider donating to Samaritan’s Purse, St. Marks Methodist Church, Sumter, or Sumter’s Home Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution “New Teacher Fund” in her memory.
