Inez Gamble Mallett, 85, widow of Isaac Eugene Mallett, died Monday, Aug. 16, 2010, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Sept. 18, 1924, in Manning, she was a daughter of the late Capers Sr. and Corena Samuel Gamble. She was a 1942 graduate of Manning Training School and a 1957 graduate of Morris College. In her youth, she attended St. Matthews Baptist Church and later she joined Providence AME Church, where she served on the Missionary Society, Stewardess Board, Pastors Aide, chairperson of the Educational Fund, and as a a member of New Light Chapter No. 254 Order of Eastern Star. She was also a member of the Retired Teachers Association and National Council of Negro Women. She retired from Clarendon School District 2 in 1985.

Survivors include two sons, Fredrick (Mary) Mallett and Cedric (Marcello) Mallett, both of Manning; two daughters, Kathy (John) Plowden of Manning and Marsha (Martin) Miller of Sumter; four sisters, Catherine (Edward) Stephens and Annie L. Gamble, both of Manning, Ida (Robert) Gumbs of New York, N.Y., and Mary (Charles) Hickson of Capital Heights, Md.; three sisters-in-law, Ida B. McCullough and Essie Gamble, both of Manning, and Christine Mallett of Philadelphia, Pa.; two brothers-in-law, John McGriff Sr. and James Dingle, both of Manning; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Eastern Star Rites were held Aug. 20 at the funeral home, 114 N. Church St., Manning.

Funeral services were held Aug. 21 at Providence AME Church, 1610 Dozier Mallete Road, Manning, with the Rev. Mary F. Rhodes, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in the churchyard cemetery.

The family received friends at the home, 1809 Bloomville Road, Manning.

LEON PRESTON Sr.

Leon "Maggie Baby" Preston Sr., 60, husband of Lizzie Wilson Preston, died Sunday, Aug. 15, 2010, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Summerton.

Born Jan. 31, 1950, in the Cypress Fork section of Clarendon County, he was a son of Maggie Gadsen Preston and the late Cleo Preston. In his youth, he attended Cypress Fork AME Church. He was a 1969 graduate of Manning Training School. He was employed as a nurse assistant for Clarendon Memorial Hospital.

Survivors besides his mother and wife of Manning include two sons, Leon Preston Jr. and Travis Preston, both of Paxville; a daughter, Regina Preston of Paxville; two nephews reared as his, Terrance and Brandon Wilson; a stepbrother, Harold (Marcia) Ridgill of Suffolk, Va.; seven aunts; three uncles; and his mother-in-law, Lucille F. Wilson of Manning.

Funeral services were held Aug. 20 at the funeral home, 114 N. Church St., Manning, with the Rev. Franklin McCants, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

The family received friends at the home of his mother, 211 Depot St., Manning.
