Hattie Mae Stewart Oliver died Saturday, Dec. 25, 2010, at Vitas Hospice Center in San Antonio, Texas.

Born May 10, 1954, in Rimini, she was the oldest daughter of the late Edward and Hattie Capers Stewart. Hattie attended the public schools of Sumter County, and graduated from Furman High School in 1971. She continued her post-secondary education at South Carolina State University. In addition to being a stay-at-home mother, she helped to care for others and later ventured into the hotel hospitality industry, where her most recent position was at The Sheraton in Raleigh, N.C.

In her youth, Hattie accepted Christ as her personal Savior and was a member of Antioch AME Church in Rimini. She later joined and was baptized at Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church in Summerton. Most recently, Hattie returned to her home church of Antioch AME and was a committed member.

Hattie was married to Sampson Oliver and they maintained an everlasting friendship.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Ellis Stewart, Edward "TJ" Stewart Jr. and Oneil Stewart; and one niece, Christine Stewart, whom she helped to raise.

Survivors include her three loving and devoted children, Anthony Oneil (Latonia) Stewart of San Antonio, Sampson Jannell (Jackie) Oliver of Raleigh and Gloria Jean Oliver (Jeffrey) Carpenter of Cincinnati, Ohio; her husband and devoted friend, Sampson Oliver of Summerton; 11 siblings, Matthew Stewart and Harry (Norine) Stewart, both of Whiteville, N.C., Henry Stewart of Manning, Earl (Gail) Stewart, Elijah (Beverly) Stewart, Ruthann (Dennis) Adams, Queen Esther Stewart, Linda (Albertus) Hampton and Shirley (Clarence) Georgia, all of Pinewood, Richard Lee Stewart of Sumter and Brenda (Joseph) Stinney of Summerton; eight grandchildren, Kurtis, Devonta, Antoneshia, Anthony Jr., Ashlea, Candice, Arsenio and Jillian; three sisters-in-law, Wilhelmenia (James) Matthews of Queens Village, N.Y., Mable (Leroy) Simmons of Summerton and Margaret Oliver of Jamaica, N.Y.; two brothers-in-law, Joe-Louis (Mary) Oliver and James Oliver Jr., both of Summerton; two maternal aunts, Josephine (Nathaniel) McFadden of Sumter and Julia (Forrester) Perkins of Washington, D.C.; seven paternal aunts and uncles, Eugene (Sarah) Stewart, Estell (Bobby) Philips, Daisy (Willie) Fisher, Martha (Floyd) Tillman and Linda (Michael) Green, all of Philadelphia, Pa., Naomi (James) Amos and Minnie Lee Stewart, both of Sumter; a niece and nephew whom she helped to raise, Berenda Stinney of Columbia and Scottie Scarborough of Sumter; a former sister-in-law, Helen Pat York of Pinewood; the Benjamin/McNeil family of Rimini; a family friend, Margie/Peaches Robinson of Columbia; a host of nieces, nephews, other loving relatives and special friends.

Funeral services were held Friday, Dec. 31, 2010, at Antioch AME Church in Pinewood with the Rev. Dr. Serena King-Freeman, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
