Maj. Gen. Michael Leeney, the U.S. Army Central deputy commanding general, met S.C. National Guard leaders, Maj. Gen. Van Mccarty, the adjutant general, and Brig. Robin Stillwell, the director of the joint staff, during the Month of the Military Child proclamation at the S.C. Statehouse on March 25. Leeney represented ARCENT during the event which recognized the significant role military children play in the armed forces community.

Gov. Henry McMaster proclaims April the Month of the Military Child during an event at the South Carolina Statehouse on Tuesday, March 25, in Columbia. Service members, state leaders and families attended the event which was a joint effort between the governor and the S.C. Department of Veterans' Affairs. South Carolina currently has 15 school districts, including Sumter County School District, that support military-connected children through the Purple Star program. There are also six individual Purple Star Schools in South Carolina, including Thomas Sumter Academy and Liberty STEAM Charter School.
