Gillis Lee Wilson, 82, husband of Athlyn Mooneyham Wilson, died on Monday, Oct. 11, 2021, at his home.

Born on May 17, 1939, in Raven, Virginia, he was a son of the late James Heighter Wilson and Stella Meyers Wilson. Mr. Wilson served in the U.S. Air Force and retired from Blue Ridge Transfer after 20 years of loyal service. He was an avid family man and was adored by all who knew him.

While stationed at Shaw Air Force Base, he met the love of his life, Athlyn J. Mooneyham of the Ashwood community of Lee County. They were married for 59 years. Together they raised three children, Michelle Wilson Pope (Jerry) and Marvin Derek Wilson, both of Sumter. He was preceded in death 15 months ago by his youngest son, Gillis Darren Wilson. He is survived by a daughter-in-law, Beth Davis Wilson, also of Sumter. Mr. Wilson was blessed with two beautiful granddaughters, Morgan Wilson-Graham (Dusty), who he nicknamed "The Kid," and Madalyn Claire Wilson, who he nicknamed "Sparky."

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. today at the Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the home.

Elmore-Cannon-Stephens-Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter is in charge of the arrangements.
