Clarendon County residents who have not already filed their taxes can receive free tax preparation help at the local library.

The Internal Revenue Service, in partnership with the Levi Pearson Scholarship Foundation, is offering free tax help at Harvin Clarendon County Library, 215 N. Brooks St., Manning.

The Levi Pearson Scholarship Foundation has been committed to helping shape and mold young adults of Clarendon and surrounding counties into sound citizens, people of good character and high integrity by means of empowerment, mentorship and scholarship in the last 15 years, according to a news release.

Through the IRS' Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, qualified residents can receive free basic income tax return preparation. IRS-certified volunteers can inform taxpayers about special tax credits for which they could qualify, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit and Credit for the Elderly, according to the release.

"Our site generally helps people whose incomes are $60,000 or less prepare their federal and South Carolina income tax returns and provide free electronic filing," said Arthur Moyd, site coordinator at the VITA Tax Center. "Due to COVID-19, tax documents can be dropped off to be prepared. Clients will be contacted for pickup once taxes have been completed."

In order to have a return prepared by a volunteer, residents must bring a valid photo identification and Social Security card for themselves, spouses and dependents. They should also bring wage and earnings statements, also known as W-2 forms, interest and dividend statements, Form 1099, a copy of last year's return and any other information concerning their income and expenses for 2022. For joint returns, both spouses must be present.
