Men in the Sumter area will be able to get screened for prostate cancer, learn about healthy living and possibly win a gift card for their screening participation during a free community health event later this month.

Sumter County Prevention Team, Healthy Minds and Healthy Families and South Carolina Cancer Alliance will host a free 2nd-Annual Men's Fair Expo on Saturday, June 15. According to a news release, "The event aims to share information with men about healthy living and learn more about the screening tests that keep us healthy."

Screening will be available for prostate cancer at the event, and a lung cancer screening provider will be there to refer patients to a screening site. According to the release, "Cancer is the second-leading cause of death in South Carolina. In Sumter County, prostate cancer was the No. 2 leading cause of cancer death from 2015-19 in men. For this five-year period, there was an annual average of 62 deaths from lung cancer. Lung cancer was the No. 1 most commonly diagnosed cancer and the No. 1 leading cause of cancer death among men and women in Sumter County."

The first 30 individuals to register and complete their PSA screening will receive a $25 gift card.

The event will be held at Sumter County Civic Center, 700 W. Liberty St., Sumter, on Saturday, June 15, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Call (803) 920-9973 to register.
