On Monday, June 21, 2021, Dr. Frederick Hubert Fagan, 78, took his final breath on Earth.

He was born on Dec. 11, 1942, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, to Hubert and Mary Fagan.

He was preceded in death by his younger brother, Kenneth Fagan.

At the age of 18, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. He valued this service highly and attained the rank of senior master sergeant. Besides being a Vietnam veteran, he was credited with 56 saves in the Pararescue Squadron in Azores, Portugal, and spent the final 12 years in the safety career field, keeping what he referred to as "his Air Force" safe. He received numerous medals throughout his military career.

Upon retiring from the military (1961-1985), he received his doctorate in education from the University of South Carolina and proceeded to work in several area schools before retiring from the public school (SCEA). He also enjoyed being a part of the S.C. Sheriffs' Association.

His loved ones will remember his sarcastic sense of humor, his patriotic love of this country and the great pride he had in serving it. His handmade gifts from painted rocks to metal sculptures for family and friends will also be treasured. He is also remembered for his insane love for his two little dogs, Suki and Chevette.

He leaves to cherish his memory: his wife of 58 years, Cynthia Erb Fagan; son, Todd (Sue) Fagan of Martinsburg, West Virginia; daughter, Lon Jeanette (Steve) Bowen of Prairieville, Louisiana; son, Shawn Fagan of Warren, Rhode Island; brother-in-law, Bruce Erb of Sumter; grandchildren, Scott (Jennifer) McLaurin, Crystal (Dwayne) Vargo, Kenny Fagan, Wade Bowen, Madeleine Fagan and Lachlan Fagan; and great-grandchildren, JR, Nick, Bella, Adela, Carson and Cassidy.

A funeral service will be held at 6 p.m. on Thursday in the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dr. David Richardson and the Rev. Steve Bowen officiating. Burial with full military honors will be at 9 a.m. on Friday at Fort Jackson National Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 6 p.m. on Thursday at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Bible Fellowship Church, 227 Broad St., Sumter, SC 29150 or to a cancer charity of your choice.

Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter is in charge of the arrangements.
