Sumter County Sheriff’s Office has taken one man into custody after a fatal shooting on Brent Street.

Deputies responded to Brent Street and Whitehorse Road at about 6:21 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 14, after reports of shots being fired. Upon arrival, deputies were patrolling the area when they heard a gunshot.

Deputies found Christopher Bruno Abrams, 56, of Sumter and a witness who was rendering aid, according to Mark Bordeaux, public information officer with Sumter County Sheriff’s Office. EMS followed suit and treated Abrams before taking him to Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital, where he later died.

Witnesses to the shooting alleged that Abrams and 35-year-old Demetrius Rico Fleming were acquaintances who were involved in a physical altercation when Fleming shot Abrams, according to Bordeaux.

Fleming was taken into custody and charged with murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime and first-degree possession of a firearm by a person convicted of certain crimes, according to Bordeaux. He was taken to Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center, where he remains after his bond was denied.
