EUNICE GAY

PAXVILLE - Eunice Gay, 70, died May 29, 2010, at her home.

Born Feb. 18, 1940, in Paxville, she was a daughter of the late John and Elizabeth Richburg Conyers. She attended Clarendon County public schools. She later earned a degree in nursing. She moved to New York and joined Universal Baptist Church in Brooklyn. She was a member of its pastor aide ministry and culinary team for most of her adult life until she returned to Paxville. She retired after 35 years as a nurse and medical surgeon technician from Downstate and Kings County hospitals in Brooklyn. She joined Chapel AME Church in 1996, where she served on the kitchen aid ministry and sang with the gospel choir.

Survivors include three children, Willie James Gay Jr (Jeanette Dunn) and Paulette Natasha Gay Keith (Leroy Witherspoon), both of Paxville, and Denise Gay Hagins (Eric) of Richmond, Va.; four brothers, Johnnie L. (Shirley) Conyers, Andrew (Lanora) Conyers, Joseph "Bobby" (Edrena) Conyers and Albert (Faye) Conyers, all of Paxville; five sisters, Rosa (Clifford) Canty, Rosenia Conyers Bailey, Geneva Conyers Bell, Jessie Conyers (Starlin) Gaymon and Elizabeth Conyers, all of Paxville; 14 grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Virginia Conyers-Knight and Ida Conyers-Smith.

Funeral services were held June 5 at Chapel AME Church in Paxville. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Community Funeral Home of Sumter handled arrangements.
