ELIZABETH BERNSHOUSE JENNINGS

Elizabeth Bernshouse Jennings, 102, died Monday, May 27, 2024, at Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital.

Born in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Andrew K. Bernshouse and Elizabeth Holladay Bernshouse.

Mrs. Jennings was a member of First Baptist Church. She was a secretary at Crosswell Drive Elementary School with 30 years of service. She was a member of the Poinsett-Bland Garden Club and a Gideon. She was a loving mother and grandmother, and she was known as “The Chocolate Roll Lady.”

She was twice married, first to the late LeRoy Wilbur Jennings Sr. and later to John “Red” Pendergrass.

Surviving are one son, Chief Master Sgt. L. W. Jennings Jr. (Ann) of Sumter; a daughter, Selma J. Piver (Jim) of Pawleys Island; one stepdaughter, Ruth P. Peterson (Paul); three grandchildren, Leroy W. Jennings III (Cindy), Christie Piver Streetman (Bert) and DeLaine Piver Garcia (Juan); and two great-grandchildren, Zachary Jennings and Alec Garcia.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Wilbert Bernshouse, and a sister, Selma Petters.

Graveside services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Friday in Sumter Cemetery with the Rev. Bob Calvert officiating.

The family will receive friends following the graveside service.
