Early voting is underway at Sumter County Voter Registration Office for the upcoming special election to fill the open Area 8 seat on Sumter School District's Board of Trustees.
Early voting began Monday, Jan. 27, and will run through Friday, Jan. 31, at the county's voter registration office and will continue Monday, Feb. 3, through Friday, Feb. 7, at the location, according to Pat Jefferson, Sumter County Voter Registration and Elections director.
The office is at 129 E. Liberty St. in downtown Sumter. The facility is also the former offices of The Item newspaper. Early voting hours each day are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
A special election is required to serve the remaining two years of Jeff Zell's term as Sumter School District's Area 8 representative after he ran for and won the state Senate District 36 seat in the November election.
The special election is set for Tuesday, Feb. 11, and only registered voters in Sumter School District Area 8 are eligible to vote.
Four candidates filed for the seat and include Foxy Rae Campbell, Phil Leventis, Tom Montgomery and Keith Schultz.
In the Saturday, Feb. 1, edition of The Item, the newspaper will have Q&A's with all four candidates, an Area 8 map and polling places for the Feb. 11 election.
