Sumter High School’s varsity boys basketball team advanced to the second round of the 5A state playoffs with a 52-50 victory over Ashley Ridge on Wednesday night.

Sumter High School’s varsity boys basketball team advanced to the second round of the 5A state playoffs with a 52-50 victory over Ashley Ridge on Wednesday night.

Sophomore Joseph Durant hit the game-winner in the final second to secure the victory for the Gamecocks. Durant finished with nine points in the game.

Sophomores Leslie Owens and Nakeem Isaac led the way for Sumter with 12 points each and junior Marcus Lane added 11.

The Gamecocks trailed 23-21 at halftime, but rallied to take a 36-33 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Lane scored seven of his 11 points in the fourth quarter.

Sumter improved to 16-11 on the season and will now travel to face Goose Creek in the second round on Saturday.
