DEMPSIE PHILLIP SANDERS

Dempsie Phillip Sanders, 65, of Dalzell, departed this earthly life on Friday, Sept. 10, 2021.

Born on Aug. 7, 1956, to the late John William Sanders and Pearline Sanders-Dennis, he was the youngest of eight siblings. Dempsie graduated from Hillcrest High School in 1974 and, shortly after, joined the United States Air Force as a security police officer at Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter. He later attended Sumter Area Technical College, currently known as Central Carolina Technical College, where he received his associate degree in refrigeration and air conditioning. Dempsie was employed with E.I. DuPont de Nemours & Co. for 16 years. Dempsie was a member of Rafting Creek Baptist Church, where he sang with the adult choir until his untimely accident in March of 1993.

Dempsie is survived by his wife of 37 years, Alta Mae Sanders; his two daughters, Marcia Sanders-Scott (Jonathan) of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Yolanda Sanders of Los Angeles, California; two sisters, Pearl Sanders of Valdosta, Georgia, and Felicia Lloyd of Sumter; three brothers, Sammie Sanders of Rembert, Boykin Sanders of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and William Sanders (Peggy) of Rembert; one aunt, Ruth Sanders of Rembert; four sisters-in-law; two brothers-in-law; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

In accordance with the COVID-19 guidelines, the family is requesting that face masks and social distancing be observed by relatives and friends during visitations from 4 to 6 p.m. at the home, 3175 Eydie St., Dalzell.

Funeral services will be held at noon on Wednesday in the John Wesley Williams Sr. Memorial Chapel of Williams Funeral Home Inc., 821 N. Main St., Sumter, with the Rev. Melvin Mack, pastor of Rafting Creek Baptist Church, officiating, eulogist.

The procession will leave from the home at 11:20 a.m.

Burial will be held at noon on Thursday at the Fort Jackson National Cemetery, 4170 Percival Road, Columbia.
