Funeral services for David Murray Jr. will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Orangehill AME Church, 3035 S.C. 261, Wedgefield. The Rev. Gregory Williams is the officiating pastor and the Rev. Larry Clark is eulogist. Interment will follow in the Bethel AME Church Cemetery, 1605 S.C. 261. The public may view today from 1 to 7 p.m. with the family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m. at Palmer Memorial Chapel, 304 S. Main St., Sumter.

David "Sonny" Murray Jr. was born in Sumter to the late David Murray Sr. and Elena Harvin Murray. On Saturday, May 14, 2022, he transitioned into eternal rest at his home in Sumter.

David attended the public schools of Sumter County and was a graduate of St. Michael High School. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War. "Sonny," as he was also known, worked for many years at Farmers Telephone Co., where he was promoted as the company's first African American supervisor until retirement.

At an early age, he joined Bethel AME Church and served in many capacities until his passing. Additionally, he was a member of the Manchester #143 Masonic Order and the Eastern Star. In 1955, he married the former Annie Mae Jones, and together they had five children. Sonny was a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather.

In addition to his parents, Sonny was preceded in death by his sons, Anthony G. Murray and David Murray III, and a brother, James D. Ramsey.

Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Annie Murray; three daughters, Vanessa M. (Lagorda) Abercrombie, Sylvia L. Murray and Valarie M. (Kenneth) Williams, all of Irmo; a brother, J. Raymond (Barbara) Murray; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren, several godchildren, nieces, nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.
