U.S. House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn, D-Sumter, was presented a key to the City of Manning by Manning Mayor Julia A. Nelson on Sept. 4 in Summerton. Clyburn was in Clarendon County for the unveiling of three historical markers honoring the families of Levi, Viola and Hammett Pearson, Harry and Eliza Briggs and the Rev. J.A. Delaine as well as the petitioners and plaintiffs who led the fight for desegregation during the 1940s and 1950s. "It was an honor to present a key to the City of Manning to Congressman Clyburn," Nelson said. "The Pearson family wanted to honor him on this day. We're grateful for his work for South Carolina and Clarendon County."
