Clarendon council chairman candidate answers questions about his candidacy

There are three candidates for Clarendon County Council chair, according to the South Carolina Election Commission. The seat is currently held by Dwight L. Stewart Jr. Stewart is running again, and the other two candidates are LaNette Samuels Cooper and Jay Johnson.

Johnson provided The Sumter Item with answers to the following questions in time for The Item's press deadline:

What are you running for?

Clarendon County Council chairman

Why are you running?

I want to be a voice for the people so they will be heard and make a difference in Clarendon County.

Have you run for political office before?

No

How long have you lived in your district?

48 years

Current job/profession:

I am a farmer and salesman for Carolina Eastern.

What makes you qualified for the seat?

I am a man of integrity, compassion and determination. I, along with my fellow council members, will listen to the residents and be a voice for them.

What challenges/concerns do you see in your district (up to 3), and how do you intend to improve them?

I would love to see lower taxes, more transparency and unity in local government.

Are you actively involved in the community? How so?

I am a member of Cross Anchor Quartet singing at local churches and festivals. I am a founding member of the New Zion July 4th Parade and Fireworks, recognizing our local veterans. I was a supporter and participant of Clarendon County Dancing with the Stars. I am a supporter of the Palmetto Pickle Music Festival, bringing concerts to our small community.
