SARDINIA - Christine Barfield Johnson, 85, widow of Robert Newell Johnson, died Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2010, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Jan. 22, 1925, in Newton Grove, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Edgar and Roxie Porter Barfield. She was a member of Sardinia Presbyterian Church, where she was active in the Womens Day Circle and Ladies Prayer Group. She was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of American Legion Post No. 149.

Survivors include four sons, Bobby Johnson of Ocean Isle Beach, N.C., Kirby Johnson (Miriam) of Alcolu, James Johnson (Beverly) of Mayesville and William Johnson (Wanda) of Manning; a daughter, Kathy Morrison (Earl) of Sardinia; 12 grandchildren, Katie Morrison Beckham, Bert Morrison, Jim Morrison, Rob Johnson, Kit Johnson Hinkle, Leah Johnson, David Johnson, Caroline Johnson, Talmadge Johnson, Hutch Johnson, Dinah Davis Johnson and Porter Johnson; and two great-grandchildren, Lucy Kate and William Beckham.

Funeral services were held Aug. 5 at Sardinia Presbyterian Church with the Rev. John Dodd and the Rev. Dr. Gordon Reed officiating. Burial followed in Sardinia-Gable Cemetery.

The family received friends at the home.

JOHN K. McCORD Sr.

John Kenneth McCord Sr., 83, husband of Harriet Magoulas McCord, died Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2010, at his home after a prolonged illness.

Born April 15, 1927, in Orangeburg, he was a son of the late Rev. Lewis Bryson and Mae Harrelson McCord. He was a graduate of Manning High School and enlisted in the U.S. Navy at age 17. A combat veteran of World War II, he served as a signalman third class aboard the Navy landing craft, LST 863, in the war's Pacific Theater. He was engaged in the U.S. liberation of the Philippines in 1944, and in the decisive 1945 American amphibious assault on Okinawa. For his military service in World War II, he was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Medal with a battle star, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon and the Victory Medal. After his discharge from the U.S. Navy in 1946, Mr. McCord earned a bachelor of science degree from Presbyterian College, and served as assistant director of the recreation department at Whitten Village in Clinton. Later, he was employed as a coach and instructor at Manning High School; and for 15 years was a salesman with Southern Agricultural Chemical Co. in Kingstree. In 1980, he cofounded an agricultural consulting firm, M&M Agricultural Consultants of Manning, and remained active in the company until his retirement.

He was a member of New Covenant Presbyterian Church. He was a former member of the VFW and NRA.

Survivors besides his wife of 62 years include two sons, Ken McCord Jr. (Charlene) of Mt. Pleasant and Shawn McCord (Renee') of Manning; one daughter, Jeri Lindsey (Jimmy) of Conway; two sisters-in-law, Anna McCord of Columbia and Frances McCord of Manning; four grandsons, Jay Lindsey (Rachel), John Lindsey (Jen), Will Lindsey and John Kenneth McCord III; two step-granddaughters; and a great-granddaughter.

He was predeceased by three brothers, James Bryson McCord, Charles Lewis McCord and William Jerome McCord.

Funeral services were held Aug. 6 at the funeral home with the Rev. Charles C. Tyler officiating. Burial followed in Manning Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to New Covenant Presbyterian Church, 2833 Alex Harvin Highway, Manning, SC 29102, or to a charity of one's choice.

EVA McFADDEN

Eva Mae Gamble McFadden, 82, widow of Willie Harold McFadden, died Thursday, Aug. 5, 2010, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Sept. 3, 1927, in Turbeville, she was a daughter of the late William Gamble and Ella Chandler Gamble Hampton and stepdaughter of the late Sam Hamptom. She attended Clarendon County public schools. She was a lifelong member of Mt. Sinai AME Church.

Survivors include four daughters, Winnie Hamm of Baltimore, Silvia Rufus, Mary McFadden, both of Sumter, Martel McFadden of Patterson, N.J.; four sons, Harry (Beverly) McFadden of Maryland, Raymond McFadden of Baltimore, Leroy (Lillie) McFadden of Gable and Willie Don McFadden of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; 18 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Aug. 9 at Mt. Sinai AME Church, 4835 Mt. Sinai Church Road, Lynchburg, with the Rev. Marie Deas-Webb, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in Edwards Cemetery.

The family received friends at the home, 7 Center St.

These services were entrusted to Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning.
