Don't miss all the horse shows, delicious food, line dancing and much more at the 28th-annual Black Cowboy Festival, which will be held May 22-25 on the land of Greenfield Farm in Rembert. The three-day event is organized and promoted by the nonprofit Black Cultural Enlightenment Society and is hosted by Mark and Sandra Myers. The festival teaches the community about the lives of Black cowboys and their legacy through educational shows, entertainment and cultural appreciation. You can also buy a 3- or 4-day weekend pass to enjoy the whole festival.
Open swim season begins Memorial Day weekend, May 26, at the City of Sumter Aquatics Center, 1115 S. Lafayette Drive. The center is equipped with a six swim lane pool, diving blocks, lazy river, waterslide and wade pool with beach entrance and fountain and also offers hot showers, a concessions area, party rental, life jackets available at no charge, and lockers available for rent. Certified Pool Operators and Aquatic Facilities Operators. Lifeguards, Swim Coaches, Water Aerobics and Water Safety Instructors employed during the season are certified through the American Red Cross. The United States Air Force Heritage of America Band the Heritage Winds Quintet will perform in Sumter on Monday, June 2, at 7 p.m. The quintet "will take the stage to showcase our nation's musical excellence," according to the event page at www.sumtersc.gov. "The ensemble seamlessly blends the commanding power of the Air Force Heritage of America Band with the refined artistry of the Heritage Wind Quintet, delivering a program of dynamic patriotic marches, stirring ceremonial pieces and evocative wind ensemble compositions. Each performance is meticulously crafted to celebrate our nation's rich heritage, showcasing precision, passion, and exceptional musicianship that will resonate with audiences of all ages." There are five bands scheduled to bring hits and all genres of tunes to downtown Sumter through the Fourth Fridays Concert Series this summer. The schedule this year is: May 23 - Terence Lonon & the Untouchables, June 27 - The Footnotes, July 25 - United Sound Entertainment, Aug. 22 - Chris Taylor & The Rumor and Sept. 26 - Sole Purpose. Concert attendance is free, and there will be plenty of food and drink available for sale. Sertoma will have plenty of cold brews for sale, Palmetto Optimist Club will be back with free books for the kids and popcorn for sale. Downtown restaurants will be open for dine-in and take-out.
Find a bite to eat this summer as Swan Lake Iris Gardens presents Food Truck Saturdays through Aug. 9. Each Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., get lunch from various food trucks with a nice view at the lake, 822 W. Liberty St. Admission to the gardens is free.
Join the City of Sumter for Touch A Truck: Storm Readiness, a free family friendly event with fun and important information to help families get storm ready. Stop by the Duke Energy tent for a free snow cone, and enjoy the DJ and face painted provided by Prisma Health. The event will be Saturday, June 7, from 9 a.m. to noon at the parking lot behind Sumter Opera House, 21 N. Main St.
Sample various beers during an evening walk through history at Sumter Museum and Sumter Original Brewery's third-annual Backcountry Brews on Tuesday, June 10, at 6 p.m. Enjoy the evening in the museum's Carolina Backcountry Homestead while tasting four beer samples from the brewery, listen to live music by Johnny Hilton and Friends, enjoy BBQ from The Bar-B-Que Hut, and learn about beer brewing and the history of the samples. The United States Air Force Heritage of America Band will celebrate Memorial Day in Manning when the 11-piece brass ensemble takes Weldon's stage at 7 p.m. The free concert provides "a meaningful way to observe Memorial Day." "Vengeance, Turn It Over to Jesus," a play written and directed by Jacqueline Sutton-Ball, who along with her husband, Lorenzo, are co-producers of the play and co-owners of Sutton Glory Ministries Productions LLC, will come to Weldon Auditorium on June 7. "'Vengeance' tells the intense and emotionally charged story of Mark and Teresa, a married couple on the brink of collapse," Sutton-Ball said. "Mark wants a divorce. Teresa is rooted in her faith in God, despite the pleas of her friends and family." Sutton-Ball said that as the story unfolds, the "deeper wounds that fuel Mark's behavior are revealed. Trust is scarce, and betrayal runs deep, with friends who may not be as loyal as they seem." The Ramblin' Rooster Tour featuring JJ Grey and Mofro and the legendary Marshall Tucker Band will bring Southern rock and soul to the Township Auditorium, 1703 Taylor St., Columbia, on Wednesday, May 21.
