Local fraternity chapter and Sumter Combat Veterans Group to hold bookbag giveaway

Santee-Wateree Regional Transportation Authority (SWRTA) is offering free rides to COVID-19 vaccinations and COVID-19 testing sites. Contact SWRTA from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday at (803) 934-0396.

A bookbag giveaway, sponsored by the Bishopville / Manning / Shaw AFB Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. in partnership with the Sumter South Carolina Combat Veterans Group, will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Aug. 14, at Millwood Elementary School, 24 Pinewood Road. This will be drive-by and walk up with masks. Hot dogs, chips and drinks will be served. Bookbags will include masks, hand sanitizer and wipes.

The Lincoln High School Preservation Alumni Association Board will hold a teleconference meeting at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 14.

A "Strike Out Cancer" bowling fundraiser to benefit Johnny Evans will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 15, at Gamecock Lanes, 817 Broad St. Cost is $20 and includes three games plus shoes (cash or check only). Call Kathy Stafford at (803) 469-3906.

The Annual Barbecue Cook-Off Benefiting the BSA of America will be held Friday-Saturday, Aug. 20-21, at the Sumter County Fairgrounds, 700 W. Liberty St. Wing ding will be held from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Friday with barbecue tasting and competition being held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
