ANNA LOUISE GLASSCHO WITHERSPOON
Anna Louise Glasscho Witherspoon was born on Oct. 19, 1948, in Kingstree, a daughter of the late Wilbur and Louise Burgess Glasscho. Anna was the second of 12 children and grew up in Sumter. She attended the public schools of Sumter County and graduated from Lincoln High School with the Class of 1968. Later that same year, Anna and Robert Witherspoon were united in marriage. They were blessed with three children, a girl and two boys. Anna loved her family and spent the next 15 years in the home as a "professional" home maker. Anna began her career outside of the home in 1984 as an assistant teacher at Alice Drive Elementary in Sumter. She really enjoyed working with the children and her classroom teacher, Mrs. Cook, and they loved their "Mrs. Anna." She retired in 2015 but never stopped talking about her experience there.
Upon retiring, Anna had more time to love on her families, husband and children, her siblings and kinfolks, and her church family. She even forged a special bond with her adopted daughter and neighbor. Anna was a very loving, kind and considerate person. She enjoyed traveling for fun and was always available to visit sick family and friends. We are already missing "our Anna."
Anna Louise Witherspoon transitioned on Sunday, Jan. 22, 2023, at Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital, Sumter.
Mrs. Witherspoon is survived by her husband, Robert Witherspoon; two sons and a daughter, Robert A. Witherspoon (Elaine) of Abilene, Texas, Dr. Felicia Tention of Columbia and Michael Witherspoon (Tilwanna) of Fort Mill; a special adopted daughter, Shay; two godchildren, Torah Dukes and Dawan Wells; the apples of her eye, six grandchildren, Jaylen Tention, Allison Witherspoon, Nevin Elliott, Michael Witherspoon II, Mason Witherspoon and Morgan Witherspoon; four sisters, Gloria Carter, Carolyn Smith and Sylvia Glasscho, all of Sumter, and Mary Scriven of Whiteville, North Carolina; five brothers, Wilbur Lee, Charles, Joe Louis, Michael and Alphonza, all of Sumter; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
In addition to her mother and father, she was preceded in death by her brother, Anthony Glasscho (April 27, 2016), and her sister, Linda G. Gaines (March 5, 2018).
In accordance with the COVID-19 guidelines, the family is requesting that face masks and social distancing be observed by relatives and friends during visitations at the home, 724 Brand St., Sumter.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday at Salem Missionary Baptist Church, 320 Fulton St., Sumter, with the Rev. Dr. Cartrell Woods, pastor, eulogist.
The remains will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. for viewing until time of services.
The procession will leave the home at 1:30 p.m.
Burial will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park, 802 N. Guignard Drive, Sumter.
