Alma Ruth Daniels Land, 84, widow of John Smith Land, died Sunday, March 6, 2011, at Covenant Place in Sumter.

Born Dec. 5, 1926, in Alcolu, she was a daughter of the late William James and Janie Martin Daniels. She was a homemaker, attended Anderson College and was a member of First United Methodist Church of Conway.

Ruth is survived by three daughters, Ellen (Richard) Taylor of Manning, Mary Ann Land of Conway and Nancy (Mike) Hodge of Easley; three grandchildren, Melissa Land (Gary) Koenig, Drs. Ryan Wilkes (Virginia) Taylor and Carrie Ruth Hodge (Trae) Murray; and three great-grandchildren, Maya Koenig, Evan Land Koenig and Kateland Taylor.

She was preceded in death by an infant son, John William Land; and five brothers, Buck, Bill, Oliver, Harry and Covert Daniels.

A graveside service was held Tuesday, March 8, 2011, at Manning Cemetery with the Rev. Tom Vassar officiating.

The family received friends immediately following the graveside service.

CARRIE J. McFADDEN

Carrie Johnson McFadden, 83, widow of Maxwell McFadden, died March 6, 2011, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

Born Nov. 20, 1927, in New Zion, she was a daughter of the late Rev. Charlie and Emma Johnson. She attended public schools in New Zion and Fayetteville, N.C.

In 1957, the family moved back to South Carolina, where she resided in the Sumter community. She accepted Christ as her Savior and joined Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a faithful member.

Survivors include three sons, Nathaniel (Josephine) McFadden of Sumter, Woodrow (Barbara) McFadden and Carlton (Jamesia) McFadden, both of Columbia; two daughters, Beverly (Willie) Samuel and Gwendolyn (Claude) Jones, both of Sumter; two brothers, Henry Johnson and Wesley Johnson of Bronx, N.Y.; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Flossie Johnson and Bertha Johnson, both of Sumter; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by eight brothers, Robert Harvey, William, Moses, Alex, Harry, Jasper and Miller Johnson and Hugh McFadden; and five sisters, Lizza Johnson, Lela Johnson Montgomery, Louisa McFadden, Susannah McFadden and Senior Burgess.

Funeral services were held Saturday, March 12, 2011, at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Marion H. Newton, senior pastor, assisting by Minister Eugene Winn, Pastor Ricky Simmons and Pastor Velda Rucker. Burial followed at New McFadden Cemetery, Olanta.

The family received friends at the home, 391 Seminole Road, Sumter.
