Letter to the editor: 5 ways to make Sumter a much better city

Posted

1. Repair potholes properly. We may need an engineer to design the proper way to repair a pothole. The repair should be even with the top of the pavement, not 3/4 inch higher.

2. Replace all missing street signs in the city and county. It's always nice when you can find the street you're looking for. Use stainless steel pop rivets to mount signs. This would be a great way to use some of Penny for Progress. Make a fine of $1,000 for removing street signs.

3. Hire one or two people full time to pick up trash in the city and county. The trash in ditches is terrible. We can do better. Every truck owner should check the bed of their trucks daily. Clean out trash.

4. Our SWRTA transportation system is very inefficient. I always see buses capable of carrying 14 people either having one or two people. They need to use much smaller buses handicap accessible. A private company like this would go out of business.

5. We should start recycling plastic bottles again instead of sending them to the landfill. Even if we have to pay a company to pick up plastic bottles at recycling centers. Let's stop filling the landfill unnecessarily.

Let's make Sumter beautiful.
