1 in custody, 1 wanted in nonfatal Sumter shooting

One man is in custody and another is wanted following a confrontation and gunfire that left a woman injured on Saturday.

Jeffery Leverne Green, 19, of Wedgefield, is wanted for attempted murder after a woman was shot during an argument, according to Tonyia McGirt, public information for the Sumter Police Department.

Monique Smith, 35, and her husband, Tramaine Quinnell Smith Sr., 42, both of Wright Street, were upset a vehicle sped through their neighborhood when they walked from their home and began to argue with the individuals at a nearby house, McGirt said.

During the confrontation, Green fired a handgun, striking a woman, McGirt said. The woman was taken to a Columbia hospital where she remains in stable condition and is expected to recover.

Smith Sr. was reportedly firing shots when officers arrived and was arrested and taken to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center. He is charged with discharging a firearm into an occupied dwelling, unlawful carry of a pistol and malicious injury to property, McGirt said.

Green, who was gone when officers arrived, is considered armed and dangerous.
