Sumter police have arrested one man in connection to the fatal shooting on Monday, May 27. The investigation continues as officers search for a second suspect.

Curtis Jefferson Jr., 19, of Mayesville, was taken into custody Wednesday morning, May 29, for his alleged involvement in the fatal shooting of a driver  and injury of a passenger at Green Swamp Road and South Guignard Drive. Jefferson Jr. is charged with murder and attempted murder and is being held at Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center, according to Tonyia McGirt, public information officer for Sumter Police Department.

Officers are still working to locate a second suspect, a minor, whose name has not been released, reportedly involved in the shooting.

Officers responded to a call of shots fired at about 7:30 a.m. Monday at the intersection of Green Swamp Road and South Guignard Drive. Once there, they found a wrecked vehicle with Tavares Keiwaun McFadden, 32, of Blanche Road, the driver, inside with an apparent gunshot wound. McFadden was pronounced dead at the scene, McGirt said.

Information gathered by officers indicated McFadden was stopped at the traffic light on Green Swamp Road when a white sedan, allegedly carrying Jefferson Jr., drove up and fired shots before speeding away on South Guignard Drive.

His passenger, a 28-year-old, was also struck by gunfire and taken to a local hospital for treatment before being released to recover at home.

A reward of $5,000 is available for information leading to an arrest.
