Sumter Police Department has arrested one man in connection to a bank robbery that occurred Saturday morning.

Marion Kelly III, 53, was charged with armed robbery, according to Tonyia McGirt, public information officer for Sumter Police Department.

Officers responded to a report of a robbery at about 11:15 a.m. at Wells Fargo on Broad Street. According to McGirt, a man attempted to make a transaction before giving a bank teller a note demanding money and threatening harm. No weapon was presented and no injuries were reported, McGirt said.

An undisclosed amount of money was handed over before Kelly got in a car and left the scene. A driver was also in the car.

With the assistance of Sumter County Sheriff's Office, the driver and the vehicle were later located at a local business while Kelly was located at a local motel. The undisclosed amount of money was recovered.

The driver was later released after an investigation determined he had given a ride to Kelly, who was a patron of the local motel, and was not involved in the actual robbery, McGirt said.

Kelly is being held at Sumter County Sheriff's Office Detention Center. At the time of the incident, he was out on bond on an armed robbery charge in 2022.
