Sumter Pastor Joey Durham: God's Word is the only light we can place our trust in

Posted

The devotion that I have on my heart for today is, "Thank God for my Bible" and my Scripture text is 2 Peter 1:19 where we read, "We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:" (KJV)

We certainly live in a challenging time in history, but finding ourselves in troubling times should not surprise the child of God because God's word states in 2 Timothy 3:1, "This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come." (KJV)

Our world today abounds with people who claim to have all the answers to the disturbing things that we are seeing take place before our eyes. In this election year, the political left and right offer differing solutions that only makes the environment of our day even more troubling. Happily, in the midst of all this confusion, God has provided "a more sure word of prophecy."

When the apostle Peter penned the words of this epistle, it was a time of great political and religious turmoil. According to history, within four years of Peter's writing this to his brothers and sisters in Christ, the Roman General Titus would seize and plunder Jerusalem, destroy the Temple and the Jewish people would be scattered over the face of the Earth. In the midst of these troubling circumstances, the Holy Spirit, through Peter, offers something that is credible, reliable and can be trusted as true and never changing, which is the Word of God.

Let's notice our text verse a little more closely. "We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:"

The troubling times of Peter's day and also the disturbing times of our day is referred to as "a dark place." This world is filled with spiritual darkness and societal confusion, but the person who knows Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior can place confidence in "a more sure word of prophecy," or in other words, the Word of God, which is the Authorized King James Bible. It is God's light in a dark place. Jesus Christ Himself is the "Day Star," the Light of the world, and He abides in the heart of the believer. The soon and imminent return of Jesus Christ is the answer to the problems of this world for the person who knows Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. The politicians claim to have all the answers, but we all know they don't. Be careful of the dangerous ideas floating around today. God's Word is the only light that we can place our trust in as the church awaits our Savior's soon return.
