Funeral services for Washington Carver James will be held at noon Thursday at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church, Sumter, with Senior Pastor Marion H. Newton officiating. Interment will follow in Antioch AME Church Cemetery, Pinewood. The public may view from 2 to 7 p.m. today with the Holy Royal Arch, New Hope Chapter No. 38-Masonic Rites Service being held from 6 to 7 p.m. at Palmer Memorial Chapel.

Washington Carver James, 76, husband of the late Elizabeth Lucas James, transitioned on Saturday, Oct. 13, 2018, at McLeod Health Clarendon in Manning. Born in Rimini, he was a son of the late Samuel Allen James Jr. and Julia Fairy James.

Carver was educated in the public schools of Sumter County and was a graduate of Manchester High School, Class of 1962, and did further educational training at Sumter Area Technical College.

Mr. James' Christian journey began at Antioch AME Church, where he served for several years as a steward and on various church boards. At the time of his death, he was a member of Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church.

He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam Era and received various military awards. Mr. Carver was employed by Williams Furniture, Exide and Federal Mogul. In addition, he was a self-employed trucker, farmer and electrician. He was a member of the Silver Masonic Lodge No. 35 and the New Hope Royal Arch No. 38.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his siblings Sammie James III, Julia B. Boyd, Wiley P. James, William Penn James, Harold James and Clyde and Rhinehart Morris.

Survivors include: his children, Wilma Rochelle James Blake and Carver Antonio (Tamikka) James, all of Sumter, Carlos Lorenzo (Lawinza) James of Manning, Brent A. Briggs, Brittany N. Briggs and Brandon C. Briggs, all of Pinewood, and Washington Carver (Shelby) James II of Sumter; eight grandchildren; five siblings, Alice (Joseph) Cummings of Summerville, Ruth D. James, Saymon (Daisy) James, Florence J. Knight, Wilkie James of Pinewood and Adraine (Mackey) DeChamps; and a host of other relatives.
