Top seed Taylor Townsend was able to survive the upset bug in her opening match in the singles main draw of the Sumter Pink Open on Wednesday at Palmetto Tennis Center. The two seeds right behind were not so lucky.

A day after two of the top six seeds in the $25,000 USTA Women's Pro Circuit event, No. 2 seed Danielle Rose Collins and third-seeded Sesil Karatancheva were eliminated as well.

Francesca Di Lorenzo, the runner-up in the Palmetto Pro Open earlier this year, advanced after upsetting Collins 5-7, 6-4, 6-1. Qualifier Marcela Zacarias rallied to upset Karatantcheva 0-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Townsend advanced to the second round as she defeated Caty McNally 6-3, 6-0.

The other two seeded players who played on Wednesday advanced. Eighth-seeded Maria Sanchez topped Nicole Coopersmith 6-3, 6-2 and seventh-seeded Ulrikke Eikeri swept Robin Anderson 6-2, 6-2.

Sarah-Rebecca Sekulic cruised into the second round with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Chanel Simmonds; Anna Tatishvili topped Tara Moore 7-6(1), 6-4; Victoria Flores was a 2-6, 7-5, 4-0, retired winner over Chieh-Yu Hsu; and Julia Elbaba topped Ida Jarlskog 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Jessica Pegula got past Emily Appleton 6-2, 6-4 in a battle of qualifiers; Laura Pigossi took down Nathaly Kurata 6-1, 6-4; and Montserrat Gonzalez advanced over Erin Routliffe 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.

There will be eight second-round matches today with the winners advancing to the quarterfinals in the 32-player field.

In doubles action, four more teams found their way into the quarterfinals.

The No. 1 team of Alexandra Mueller and Caitlin Whoriskey defeated Eikeri and Zacarias 7-6(4), 6-2; the No. 3 team of Victoria Rodriguez and Simmonds defeated Salome Devidze and Tatishvili 6-3, 6-4; Rasheeda McAdoo and Jada Robinson teamed up to defeat the No. 4 team of Jovana Jaksic and Ronit Yurovsky 5-7, 6-4, 10-8; and Kerrie Cartwright and Kariann Pierre-Louis were winners via walkover against the No. 2 team of Amra Sadikovic and Maria Sanchez.

There will be four doubles matches. The feature match on Court 1 will be a doubles match beginning at 6:30 p.m. between the team of Pegula and Townsend and the team of Cartwright and Pierre-Louis.

The tournament will conclude on Sunday.
