A few days ago we began 2017. As we said goodbye to 2016 and hello to 2017, many began thinking about resolutions. Today, I want to challenge you to think about investing as part of your resolutions for 2017. The investments I want us to consider are the investments in other people.
In Matthew 5:14 and 16 we can read these words: "You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven."
As we consider letting our lights shine we should ask the question, "How am I investing in others?"
When I think of investing in others, I first think about investing in my family. The first institution God created was the family, thus one of the greatest investments we can make is taking time to be with our families. Invest in our spouses by talking with them, walking with them, supporting each other in our endeavors. We can invest in our children by attending their events, playing catch, reading a book, going fishing or just listening to how their day went. One of the greatest investments to pass onto our family is our love for God. We can pray together, do devotions and worship together.
How will you invest in your family?
We can also invest in others. If we have ever had a teacher, coach, preacher or youth worker invest in us, then we should pay that forward by investing in others. We can be a tutor, a coach or a mentor to others. Lessons we have learned can be passed on to others. The author John Maxwell once said, "You are not a success until you have a successor." We build successors by investing in people.
Who are you investing in?
Today may we let our light shine by making lasting investments in other people? Next week our focus will be on giving.
