Sumter School District track meet set for Tuesday

The boys and girls track and field teams from Crestwood, Lakewood and Sumter high schools will gather at Memorial Stadium today for a little Sumter School District competition.

The teams will compete in the Sumter District Championship beginning at 5 p.m. The field events and running events are scheduled to begin at the same time.

This will be the second big meet at Memorial Stadium in the last few days. On Saturday, SHS played host to the Gamecock Invitational.

The Sumter boys finished second in a tight battle with Wilson in a 9-team meet. Wilson won with 139.50 points while Sumter had 126. Crestwood was eighth with 19 points and Thomas Sumter Academy was ninth with 12 points.

Brandon Poston and Ja'Keem Heyward both won events for the Gamecocks. Poston won the 3,200-meter run in a time of 10 minutes, 12.72 seconds, and Heyward won the long jump with a distance of 21 feet, 10 inches.

The 4x800 relay team of Poston, Brian Gamboa, Theron Bradford and Keron Benbow won in a time of 8:51.44.

Poston was second in the 1,600 and Bradford was second in the 400 dash. Anthony Andrews and Benjamin Ibe were second in the pole vault and triple jump, respectively, as were the 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams.

The Sumter girls finished a distant third out of 10 teams. Blythewood won with 140 points, while West Florence had 111 and Sumter 71.

Thomas Sumter was eighth with 53 points and Crestwood was ninth with 21 points.

The Lady Gamecocks had one winner - Carolyn Alan in the pole vault. She won with a height of 09-06.

Sumter had three second-place finishes though, Kayla Greene in the 400-meter dash, MacKenzi Zimmerman in the 1,600 run and the 4x400 relay team of Nyasia Cummings, Juelle King, Greene and Inayah Lipscomb.

TSA won four events, led by Aubrey Stoddard. She won the 800 in 2:35.63 and the 1,600 in 5:47.25.

Bella Crowe won the 3,200 in 13:10.77 and Taja Hunley won the 100 hurdles in 18.01 seconds.

Crestwood's Sedajah Rembert was second in both the long jump and triple jump.
