Mathis was a well-known fixture in the community and active in Clarendon County Chamber of Commerce and many charitable causes.
"The Sumter Item family is devastated to learn of the passing of Gail Mathis," said Item Publisher Jack Osteen. "Gail was the finest Clarendon County ambassador this company could have ever had. She is irreplaceable. For more than 30 years, she worked as hard as anyone I know."
Mathis, 58, was the wife of James Victor "Jimmy" Mathis.
She was born May 5, 1959, in Montezuma, Georgia, and was a daughter of the late Roy Hester Lamberth and the late Mary Merritt Lamberth. She was the bureau manager for The Clarendon Sun newspaper and a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband of Manning; two sons, Jamie Mathis (Amanda) of Alcolu and Chris Mathis (Hope) of Manning; and three grandchildren, Lila Kate Mathis, Gavin Mathis and Huxley Mathis.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Roger Dale Lamberth.
A funeral service was held on Wednesday, and burial followed in Clarendon Memorial Gardens.
Memorials may be made to A Second Chance Animal Shelter, P.O. Box 607, Manning, SC 29102.
