Sumter County Courthouse is set to get some much-needed attention after Sumter Historic Preservation Design Review Committee approved renovation plans during its meeting on Thursday.

The purpose of the renovations is to update the building's exterior and to make the structure - constructed in 1907 to replace the 1821 courthouse - compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act by adding handicap-accessible restrooms and installing an elevator on the Harvin Street side of the building.

Exterior updates to the building, 141 N. Main St., will include replacing all of the existing windows - installed in the 1960s during renovations at that time - and retouching the brick.

The windows are in desperate need of replacement, Danny Shelley of James, DuRant, Matthews & Shelley AIA Architects, said.

New windows will be custom built to look just like the existing windows and will be painted green, said Helen Roodman, Sumter City-County Planning Department senior planner.

Emergency Room to get expanded parking lot

Palmetto Health Tuomey's Emergency Room's parking lot will expand in the near future after a neighboring structure at 142 N. Main St. is demolished and the empty lot is paved.

The lot across the street from the hospital is already used for extra parking, said Dr. Michelle Logan-Owens, chief operating officer at Palmetto Health Tuomey.

On the lot sits a 1,300-square-foot building that was originally built to be a service station in 1956 and was most recently used as extra floor space for Seaco Music before the business relocated to Bultman Drive.

The structure is not connected to any specific historical events or people, states the staff report.
