Sumter High boys golf finishes tied for 11th in 5A state tournament

FLORENCE - The Sumter High School varsity boys golf team finished in a tie for 11th among 16 teams in the 36-hole 5A state tournament played on Monday and Tuesday at Country Club of South Carolina.

The Gamecocks had a 2-round score of 637, tying with Wade Hampton of Greenville. SHS shot a 319 in the first round and 318 in the second round. WH shot 320 in the opening round and 317 in the second round.

Gaffney with a 27 under par score of 549. It easily outdistanced second place Boiling Springs, which shot a 577.

Evans Lewis led Sumter in the first round with a 77. Dixon Flowers followed with a 79, Dwight Jenkins shot an 81, Bradley Coulter an 82 and Michael Solberg an 84.

Lewis led Sumter in the second round with a 75. Flowers followed with a 78, Coulter a 79, Solberg shot an 86 and Jenkins an 87.

Lewis had a 36-hole score of 152. Flowers followed with a 157, Coulter a 161 Jenkins a 168 and Solberg a 170.

BISHOPVILLE - Pee Dee Academy scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning to beat Robert E. Lee Academy 2-0 in the opening game of the SCISA 2A baseball state championship series on Monday at the REL field.

Austin Windham was the hard-luck loser for the Cavaliers. He pitched a complete game, allowing five hits while striking out five and walking two.

Garrett McDaniels tossed the shutout for the Golden Eagles. He allowed four hits while striking out nine and walking three.

The Cavaliers dropped to 23-4 on the season, while Pee Dee improved to 20-2.

The teams were playing Game 2 on Tuesday in Mullins.
