Sam "Nogga" Ramsey Jr., 79, was born on Oct. 16, 1938, in Sumter, the oldest of 10 children born to the late Sam Ramsey Sr. and Betsy Wright Ramsey.

He was called from earthly labor to eternal rest on Sunday, Sept. 30, 2018, at Carolinas Hospital System, Florence.

He attended public school in Sumter and received additional training through his employment. "Nogga" was employed at the South Carolina Department of Transportation and retired in 2001. He accepted Christ at an early age and attended Wayman Chapel AME Church. As an adult, he reaffirmed his faith and reconnected as a full member at Wayman Chapel. He supported the church and attended regularly, until his health declined. He was united in marriage to the late Lucy Mae Weston and to this union four sons were born. He later met and married the late Louise Brooks and they were blessed with three daughters.

Precious memories of his life will be shared by two sons, James Ramsey of Woodbridge, Virginia, and Ely (Shelia) Ramsey of Greensboro, North Carolina; three daughters, Rose Ramsey (Luke) Okojie of Landover, Maryland, Wanda Ramsey (Nathan) Long of Clinton, Maryland, and Brenda Ramsey of Washington, D.C.; 19 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; sisters, Sarah Ramsey Lewis, Rosa Lee Ramsey (Robert) Dennis, Lou "Juliette" Ramsey Diggs of Sumter and Rosanna Ramsey White of Detroit; godson, Henry "Joe" Singleton of South Carolina; a special friend and companion, Mary Williams; two brothers-in-law; two sisters-in-law; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

The family is receiving relatives and friends at the home, 1755 Ethel Lane, Sumter.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Wayman Chapel AME Church, 160 N. Kings Highway, Sumter, with the Rev. Dr. Dennis W. Broughton Jr., pastor, eulogist.

The remains will be placed in the church at 9 a.m.

The funeral procession will leave at 9:20 a.m. from the home.

Burial will be at Wayman Chapel AME Church Cemetery.
