For about 18 years, the Rotary club has sold the onions as a fundraiser to help provide scholarships to University of South Carolina Sumter, Central Carolina Technical College, Morris College and at-large for someone attending another college. Proceeds also go to provide a free dictionary to every fifth-grade student in the county and Happy Feet, a program that provides free shoes to less fortunate children.
Barry Reynolds, treasurer of the Rotary Club of Sumter-Palmetto, said the organization has been selling the onions for about 18 years and sells about 10,000 pounds of onions a year. The onions are sold in quantities of 10- and 25-pound bags for $11 and $22, respectively.
Rotarians are now taking advance orders, but you can also buy them at a tent across from SAFE Federal Credit Union on Wesmark Boulevard from May 10 through May 13, or when they sell out, whichever comes first.
If you don't know a Rotary Club of Sumter-Palmetto member, you can preorder the onions by emailing Reynolds at BReynolds@sumtercoatings.com or by calling him at (803) 847-0780.
