On Thursday, Oct. 11, 2018, Robert L. Howard Jr., 78, heard the Master's call, "Come unto me all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." Robert Lee accepted the call.

Robert Lee was born on Feb. 15, 1940, in St. Charles, to the late Robert and Rosa Mae Charles Howard, the second son of five. He was the grandson of Charlie and Camilla F. Howard and Laddie and Kizzie Charles. Robert Lee was born and reared in a Christian home and joined Unionville AME Church at an early age. Robert Lee attended the public schools of Lee County. He left to live in Brooklyn, New York, where he worked for several years. It was there he met and married the former Bessie M. York and to this union five children were born.

Robert Lee leaves to mourn his passing: his children, three daughters, Jacqueline Howard, Joyce York and Luvato Howard, all of Brooklyn, and two sons, Gregory Howard of Brooklyn and James York of Columbia; eight grandsons; three granddaughters; four great-grandsons; four great-granddaughters; three brothers, the Rev. Laddie N. (Katherine) Howard and Albert B. (Fannie) Howard of Sumter and LeRoy Howard of Fayetteville, North Carolina; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

The family is receiving relatives and friends at the home of his brother and sister-in-law, the Rev. Laddie N. and Katherine Howard, 3725 Cottage Path, Sumter.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at Unionville AME Church, 1330 Swimming Pen Road, Mayesville, with the Rev. Alvin E. Webb, pastor, eulogist, assisted by the Rev. Dr. James S. Cooper Sr., presiding elder of the Sumter District AME Church, presiding.

The remains will be placed in the church at 10 a. m.

The funeral procession will leave at 10:15 a.m. from the home.

Burial will be at Unionville AME Churchyard Cemetery.
