Richard "Dick" Lee Brookes, age 81, beloved husband of Jean Brookes, died on Sunday, July 15, 2018, at Sumter Health and Rehab.

Dick was born on March 6, 1937, in Morgantown, West Virginia. He was a son of the late James Allen Brookes and Hillis Clark Brookes. Dick served during the Vietnam War era as a member of the United States Army. He later served as a radio announcer for the Sumter P-15 baseball program, Wilson Hall football and several other high schools in the Sumter area. He was an avid Pittsburgh Pirate and South Carolina Gamecock fan. He will be remembered as a very loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

In addition to his wife, Jean, Dick is survived by two sons, Richard Lee Brookes Jr. of Carlisle, Pennsylvania, and James A. Brookes II and his wife, Michele, of Waynesboro, Pennsylvania; one daughter, Samantha Brookes of Carlisle; six grandchildren, Johnathan Brookes, Nora Brookes, Samuel Keller, Ethan Brookes, Katlyn Stitley and Samantha Dougherty; three stepchildren, Rodney Spertzel and his wife, Penny, of New Cumberland, Pennsylvania, Julie Manning of Marysville, Pennsylvania, and Susan Warter and her husband, Michael, of Leesburg, Virginia; and seven step-grandchildren, Courtney Spertzel, Samantha Spertzel, Sarah Manning, Hunter Manning, Cameron Warter, Meredith Warter and Jillian Warter.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday in the Bullock Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Chuck Staggs officiating.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 10 to 11 a.m. at Bullock Funeral Home.

Interment will take place at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 23, at the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Annville, Pennsylvania.
