Sumter Police Department is investigating a fatal wreck on South Pike West that left one woman dead and another with a citation this morning.

The crash happened just before 8:30 a.m. in front of a business plaza at 554 S. Pike West when 21-year-old Rebecca Whitlock, driving a 2007 GMC Yukon, made a left turn into the plaza, striking a 2003 Buick that was traveling east on Pike, according to a preliminary investigation.

The driver of the Buick, Katina Hunter, 29, of Rembert, was transported to Palmetto Health Tuomey where she later died, states a release from the police department.

Sumter County Coroner’s Office has notified Hunter's family members and an autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday.

Whitlock, of Coward, was cited for failure to yield the right of way.

The investigation is ongoing.
