Professional services contract goes before Sumter school board

After taking no action following a two-hour executive session at a special-called meeting Thursday, Sumter School District's Board of Trustees will meet again Monday for its regular monthly board meeting.

A district staff member distributed the agenda for the meeting, which will be at 6 p.m. at Alice Drive Middle School, 40 Miller Road, to the media late Thursday.

Highlighting the agenda may be action taken following executive session regarding a professional services contract, which is listed on the agenda as part of the board's discussion in closed session. It won't be known until Monday night whether the board will take any action on a contract.

Regarding potential professional services contracts, the board's Facilities Committee does have two study proposals on the table. Committee Chairman and at-large board member William Byrd said at the trustees' last regularly scheduled board meeting Jan. 29 that recommendations for a population demographics study and a district facilities study would be forthcoming to the full board.

According to previous comments from the committee's members, the studies will provide a comprehensive look at existing schools' physical assets and needs and future facility utilization, which could factor into closing certain smaller, low-enrollment schools in the district.

Potentially closing low-enrollment schools has been a topic of the board for more than a year now, especially since the revelation of a financial budget crisis in December 2016. The district ended fiscal year 2017 on an upward trend with money in the bank but still has a relatively low general fund balance, according to the district's new chief financial officer.

On Monday, acting Superintendent Debbie Hamm will also provide a district update, and students from Alice Drive Middle will also give a presentation, according to the agenda.

The public is welcomed to attend Monday's meeting, and public participation is also listed on the agenda.

More on Thursday's called meeting

Sumter School District's Board of Trustees did not take action or release a statement following its special-called meeting on Thursday night at the district office, 1345 Wilson Hall Road.

After brief opening remarks by board Chairman the Rev. Daryl McGhaney, board members went into executive session and behind closed doors.

According to the meeting agenda, the board met with attorneys and received legal advice relating to potential adversarial claims and discussion of negotiations related to proposed contractual arrangements.

Also, according to the agenda, board members discussed personnel/employment matters.
