An employee at a manufacturing plant in Sumter County was injured by a machine on Wednesday, officials confirmed.

A 26-year-old man had four of his fingers cut off in an incident on April 25 at Mt. Franklin Foods, according to Ken Bell, public information officer for the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.

The employee of the candy and nut products manufacturer was airlifted to Palmetto Health Richland.

Bell said the sheriff’s office and Sumter County EMS responded to the plant on Southgate Drive off Corporate Way.

A message to both the Texas-based headquarters human relations department and local plant were not answered, and the calls were not returned by press time Wednesday.

Details of the incident have not been released, including where the accident happened. There is no initial indication any production was affected. It was also not immediately clear what type of machine or equipment was involved.
