Mayesville Community Coalition's breast cancer walk to be held Saturday

Clarendon School District One will conduct free vision, hearing, speech and developmental screenings as part of a child find effort to identify students ages 3-5, who may need special education services and are not enrolled in a public school. Screenings will be conducted from 9 a.m. to noon at the Summerton Early Childhood Center, 8 South St., Summerton, on the following Tuesdays: Nov. 13; Dec. 11; Jan. 8, 2019; Feb. 12, 2019; March 12, 2019; April 9, 2019; and May 14, 2019. The Sumter Combat Veterans Group will meet at 10 a.m. today at the headquarters building, 529 N. Wise Drive. All area veterans are encouraged attend.

The Mayesville Area Community Coalition will sponsor its 11th breast cancer walk and celebration on Saturday, Oct. 20. This year's theme is "Be Bold, Be Fearless, Be Brave." Sign in for the walk will be held at 7:30 a.m. at St. Mark UME Church, Mayesville, with the walk beginning at 8:30 a.m. on the Mary McLeod Bethune Nature Trail. Following the walk, there will be a big pep rally and recognition ceremony inside the church with door prizes and awareness information. Theme T-shirts are available in various sizes and prices. The 15th Annual Sumter Coin Club Coin Show will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 20, at Bethesda Church of God fellowship hall, 2730 Broad St. Free appraisals for up to 10 coins. Door prizes will be given every 30 minutes. There will be a drawing for a gold coin. Attendees will have the opportunity to buy, sell and trade. Call Mitchell Johnson at (803) 651-8251.

The Lincoln High School Preservation Alumni Association will meet at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 21, at 26 Council St. Call the alumni office at (803) 773-0444 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday or Wednesday.

The South Carolina Education Association for Retired Educators (SCEA-R) Sumter County will meet at noon on Wednesday, Oct. 24, at the North HOPE Center, North Main Street. All members are asked to wear red in recognition of support for education. Each member is also encouraged to bring a new member. Refreshments will be served.

A fatherhood fall festival, presented by the Midlands Fatherhood Coalition, will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 26, at 687 N. Guignard Drive. The whole family is encouraged to attend. Event will feature trunk-or-treat, pumpkin carving contest, games, prizes, vendors and more. There will be food and refreshments for sale with proceeds donated to the coalition. There will also be a fright fight video game tournament with prizes awarded to first, second and third place winners for each game. Games include Dragonball Fighterz, Mariokart Deluxe, Madden19 and NBA 2K. Entrance fee for tournament is donation of a non-perishable food item (canned food, pasta, rice, oatmeal, etc.). Because of God We Can Outreach Ministry will hold its final giveaway at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27, at the home of Viola Shaw, 186 Green Lane. Food will be served at noon. Donated items to be given away include clothing (adults and children), shoes, table saw, dishwasher, dresser, raised toilet seats, toilet safety rails, bed, comforter sets and much more. The Sumter Branch NAACP will meet at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 28, at Orangehill AME Church, 3035 S.C. 261 South, Wedgefield. The branch election supervisory committee will be elected.

The Sumter County Veterans Association's Veterans Day program will be held on Monday, Nov. 12, on the lawn of the old Sumter County Courthouse on North Main Street. The program will begin at 11 a.m. with Col. Derek O'Malley, 20th Fighter Wing commander, serving as keynote speaker. Prior to the program, there will be a Veterans Day parade at 10 a.m. on Main Street. The program will honor all veterans, living or deceased, for the service they have given and continue to give to keep our country free. Call Larry E.
