Firefighters are battling a massive warehouse fire in Sumter that has been raging since 4 a.m.

It’s way too early to tell what started the blaze that has destroyed a 200,000-square-foot warehouse building on twice-as-large property on Hauser Street, Sumter Fire Department Chief Karl Ford said.

No one appears to have been inside or injured, he said.

The fire was still going four hours after it began as it continues to burn plastic and carpet fibers that were stored inside by Hodge Distribution & Logistics.

Ford said there is a lot of carbon in the black smoke because of the substances burning.

Ford said the roof has collapsed, causing an obstacle for firefighters to get to the source of the fire underneath.

A recap of the fire can be seen on The Sumter Item's Facebook page.
