Mary Elizabeth Hamer Stevens, age 87, beloved wife of 64 years to John Townsend Stevens Jr., died on Monday, July 30, 2018, at her residence.

Born in Clio, she was a daughter of the late William Douglas Hamer and Lila Smith Hamer. Mary graduated from Lander College. She was active in politics in the Washington, D.C., area, where she was an election judge. She also taught first grade. She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Surviving in addition to her husband are two sons, William James Stevens of Edisto Beach and John Townsend Stevens III of Panama City Beach, Florida; three daughters, Mary Susan Stevens of Sumter, Janet Lynn Dufner and her husband, Donald, of Hawkinsville, Georgia, and Karen Leigh Boykin of Givhans; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, John Allen Hamer.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday at the Bullock Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be held at 1 p.m. at the Fort Jackson National Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. on Monday at Bullock Funeral Home.
